Site chat
A chat bubble on your own website: visitors ask a question, you answer from the Sumidata dashboard - with the visitor's session replay one click away. Included on every plan.
01Turning it on
One attribute on the snippet you already have. No separate script, no extra setup.
Add data-chat="true" to the Sumidata <script> tag - or flip the Site chat switch on the Install page and copy the snippet from there.
<script
src="https://sdk.sumidata.io/loader.js"
data-project-id="YOUR_PROJECT_ID"
data-src="https://sdk.sumidata.io/sumidata.js"
data-chat="true"
async
></script>A dark Ask us anything bubble appears in the bottom-right corner of every page that carries the snippet. The chat loads separately, after the SDK has started, so it does not slow down your page.
@sumidata/browser npm package does not show the widget - use the HTML snippet with data-chat="true" on the pages where you want the bubble.02What a visitor sees
A small panel with the conversation, a message box and an optional email field.
- Clicking the bubble opens a Questions & answers panel. On phones it takes the whole screen.
- The visitor types a question and presses Send (or Enter). A message can be up to 4,000 characters.
- The + button attaches one image per message - a screenshot is the usual case. The visitor sees a preview in the conversation; clicking it opens the full size.
- After the first message the panel offers an optional email field: Leave your email - we'll notify you about the reply. Leaving it is up to the visitor.
- While the panel is open, your replies appear within a few seconds.
| Images | Limit |
|---|---|
| Formats | Images only: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP |
| Size | Up to 5 MB per image |
| Per message | One image, with or without text |
Anything else is refused with Images only, up to 5 MB, and nothing is sent.
03Answering from the dashboard
Chats in the project's sidebar. Every member of the workspace can read and reply.
- Open Chats in the project's sidebar. Conversations are listed newest first; a badge in the sidebar shows how many are waiting for a reply. Search finds a conversation by the visitor's email.
- A conversation shows the whole thread and the page where the question was asked. View session → opens the replay of that visitor's latest session, so you see what they were doing when they asked.
- Reply with text, an image, or both - the same image limits apply.
- Delete removes the conversation for both sides, images included.
04How notifications arrive
Email in both directions. Grouped, so a busy site does not flood an inbox.
| Who | When | What they get |
|---|---|---|
| Your team | A visitor sends a message | New chat message on your site - the start of the message, the page it came from and an Open Chats button that opens the conversation. Sent to every member of the workspace. |
| The visitor | You reply, if they left an email | You got a reply to your question - the start of your reply and a link back to the page where they asked. |
Several messages in a row are grouped: one conversation sends at most one email every five minutes, and one site sends your team at most 30 alerts an hour. Visitors who left no email see your reply the next time they open the chat on your site.
05Good to know
Privacy, spam protection and how long conversations are kept.
- Conversations belong to their project: only people in your workspace can see them.
- Spam protection is built in. A visitor can send up to 10 messages a minute in one conversation and start up to 3 conversations an hour; past that the widget asks them to wait a moment.
- Conversations and their images are kept for up to 3 years after the last message, like the rest of your data, and then deleted.
- Site chat is included on every plan, Free too. Messages are not counted against your plan's limits.
